After Kenyan attack, Somali militants abandon city

Map locates Kismayo, Somalia

(AP) ? Al-Shabab rebels pulled out of a key port city in southern Somalia, the group said Saturday, a day after Kenyan troops invaded and marched toward the city center and seaside port that long served as the militants' key source of funding, officials said.

Residents in Kismayo said they woke to find police and government headquarters abandoned by the militants, sparking a looting spree of the government and police headquarters.

"They withdrew from here last night. The town is not under anyone's control now," Mohamed Hassan, a resident, said. "People feel some relief now. We hope no more fighting will take place."

The withdrawal came about 24 hours after Kenyan forces made a beach landing and as inland troops from Somalia and Kenya moved toward the port city from the west.

"Looting and chaos is going on here. Thugs are taking advantage of the vacuum," Maryan Hussein, another resident, said. "The abandoned houses are being ransacked and the streets are occupied by people carrying belongings."

Col. Cyrus Oguna, a spokesman for the Kenyan military, said five al-Shabab fighters were killed in a battle overnight. Two commanders were killed in the fighting, the military said.

He said the Kenyan forces are still verifying the reports that al-Shabab had pulled out of Kismayo. "For now we are treating it as a theory," he said.

The Kenyan troops landed by boats in the northern part of Kismayo on Friday and moved toward the port, he said. He said that al-Shabab lost "many, many militants, including some key commanders" during battles on Friday that involved helicopter gunships.

Al-Shabab used Twitter to announce the news it was leaving Kismayo.

"Last night, after more than 5 years the Islamic administration in Kismayo closed its office," the tweet said. "Kismayo shall be transformed from a peaceful city governed by Islamic Shari'ah into a battle-zone between Muslims" and invaders.

Al-Shabab found little popular support in Kismayo because of the conservative brand of Islam it tried to impose on residents. Al-Shabab carried out public executions, whippings and amputations as punishments, and enforced a conservative dress code.

Al-Shabab was forced out of Mogadishu in August 2011 and lost one of its major sources of funding when it could no longer tax businesses in the city's main market. Since then the taxes al-Shabab charged on goods coming into Kismayo's port were seen as its last major funding source.

As it no longer holds any major cities in Somalia, al-Shabab is expected to operate more as an insurgent force that carries out suicide and roadside bomb attacks.

Amber Alert for 2 children after Tenn. fire

An Amber Alert has been issued after officials failed to find the remains of two children thought to be inside a house that burned to the ground in Tennessee. NBC's Lori Wilson reports.

By NBC News and wire services

Authorities in Tennessee have issued a statewide Amber Alert for two young siblings who have missing since their grandparent?s home was destroyed by a fire.

"We don't know where they are," Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm told WSMV-TV. "We don't have any indication that they're in another state."

Authorities issued the alert late Friday evening after investigators spent a fifth day trying to determine if there were any remains of the children in the fire debris.

The children, identified as Chloie Leverette, 9, and Gage Daniel, 7, were living with their grandparents at the house that burned Sunday night and early Monday.

Choking back tears at times, Gage?s father, Christopher Daniel, said he had no idea what could have happened to the children.?"I don't know what to think. I don't know what to think," Daniel told The Associated Press. "They don't think that they burned up in the fire, the way I took it they don't."

The children have not been seen since before the fire Sunday night.

Two bodies tentatively identified as 72-year-old Leon "Bubba" McClaran and his wife, 70-year-old Molli McClaran, were recovered Monday and have been sent to the Nashville medical examiner's office for autopsy. She was the children's maternal grandmother, he their step-grandfather.

"To err on the side of caution, as far as law enforcement is concerned, we feel like we can leave no stone unturned and just try to follow every lead that we can to ensure that they're not somewhere else," Helm told WSMV-TV in Nashville. "I don't know where else they would be. They were a close knit family."

Multiple fire experts had processed the debris of the incinerated farmhouse and no trace of the children was found, authorities say.

Helm said the TBI does not have any direct evidence that the children are victims of foul play. She said there are no persons of interest in the case and that investigators are following all leads, but would not elaborate.

Forensic teams from Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville were brought in to help in the search.

Forensic anthropologist Steven A. Symes, who formerly worked in the medical examiner's office for Shelby County, said it was a smart decision for authorities to bring in these teams because they have the expertise.

"It just takes some screening and some close looking and understanding that a piece of drywall and piece of skull bone burned look about identical," he said.

Symes said the recovery of remains from fires has advanced as the forensic anthropology field grows, but he acknowledged it is still a slow process. He said the length of time to recover remains depends on the scene and how detailed the search is.

"Unfortunately sometimes a case that you least expect to be suspicious or difficult turns into that type of case," he said.

Neighbor Erika Barnet said she was starting to come to terms that her neighbors may have died in the fire, but now says she doesn?t know what to think.

"It was just fire everywhere," Barnett told WSMV-TV. "As hot as that fire was over there, I don't see how they would have gotten out."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

FIFA 13 Vs Pro Evo 2013: Which Football Game Should You Get ...

There are two great football games on the market this week. Most fans will only buy one. It?s a tough call.

Alone amongst major sporting series, the battle between FIFA and Pro Evo is actually a pretty fair fight. Both games present compelling arguments as to which is the better football game, depending on who you are and what you?re looking to get out of your game.

Given this unique situation, I thought rather than reviewing both games individually and simply preach to the converted, I?d throw them in the ring and see how they trade blows.

Below, I?ll be listing each thing I think one game does better than the other. If something isn?t mentioned, assume it?s roughly equivalent. Hopefully you can pick through it all and, knowing what you prefer in your football game, choose the one that?s right for you.

WHAT FIFA DOES BETTER

Licenses ? Perhaps a little unfair, given this is a business decision, but it?s still a significant feather in FIFA?s cap. FIFA 13 lets you play in the Barclay?s Premier League as Arsenal. In Pro Evo, you play in the English League as North London. Sure, Konami balance this out with some licensed tournaments, like the Champion?s League, but the number of official leagues FIFA 13 boasts more than outweighs this.

Animation & Handling ? Where Pro Evo 2013?s players still move and receive the ball like they?ve been carved by Geppetto, FIFA 13?s players have a fluidity and grace unmatched in all of sports gaming. It?s one of the first things you notice when switching between the games (as I have all week), and given the importance of movement and touch is also one of the most critical.

Online Play ? It?s not even a contest. FIFA 13 has so many online modes tucked away in its EA Sports FC, from seasons to one-offs to challenges, that you can see why millions of people buy this game solely for the multiplayer. My favourite are the new games tied to real-world events, where you can pick any team and play one of their recent (or upcoming) fixtures with the actual squads, injuries and even player form carrying over from reality into FIFA 13.

Commentary ? Again, no contest. There?s plenty of recycled content in there, but in terms of fluidity, relevance and overall entertainment value, FIFA shouts all over Pro Evo?s embarrassingly bare-bones efforts. A nice added touch this year are constant crosses to sideline reporters and audible updates from concurrent games.

Tutorial ? My God. Where did this come from. Pro Evo used to have the upper hand here, with its training mode, but FIFA has swept in and given us not just the best tutorial in sports, but maybe the best tutorial system in all of gaming. How? You get little mini-game challenges to play while an actual game is loading. Yes, instead of staring at a loading screen (or blindly shooting as in previous FIFAs), you can continually learn things and improve your game, every time, and not just to learn, but you?re playing for points. It?s genius.

WHAT PRO EVO DOES BETTER

Role-Playing ? Both games have the expected ?be a pro? mode, where you assume the role of a single player on a team, but where FIFA?s is still frustratingly ambivalent, Pro Evo?s would be a viable purchase as a standalone game. I?m serious. The challenge of rising through the ranks is scaled just right, you?re given constant feedback on your progress, there?s the ability to assign custom training regimes, and you even have chats with your agent once a week. There?s so much depth there it?s easy to forget the rest of the game even exists.

Space ? I don?t know whether Pro Evo?s field is bigger or its players smaller, but Konami?s game more accurately portrays the amount of space you have to move on a football field. FIFA always feels a little cramped for my liking, while Pro Evo feels like I?ve got plenty of space to move and pass (and bigger goals to aim at as well).

It?s Smarter ? FIFA may look sharper with its fancy effects and official kits, but Pro Evo?s AI still plays the smarter game of football, especially in the attacking third of the pitch. The computer?s players make better attacking runs and are more patient defenders, leading to more calculated and realistic affairs than FIFA?s emphasis on speed and attacking play.

Human Beings ? They may not animate as smoothly as FIFA?s players, but the men populating Konami?s game look a lot more like professional footballers than EA?s often disproportionate cartoon blimp people.

WHICH ONE I PREFER

Like I said, hopefully you can pick through that and sort out which of the two is more suited to you. If for some godforsaken reason you need me to act as a tie-breaker, though, I?m going to go with FIFA. Just.

Konami deserve a drink or three for the work they?ve done on Pro Evo this year. After a succession of lacklustre games this console generation, the series was probably one or two years from oblivion, but wholesale improvements across the board, particularly in areas more serious football fans will tinker with, mean it?s once again a credible competitor. Indeed for many, aforementioned serious fans in particular, it?ll be the superior product.

But for me, it still doesn?t have the mustard to get past FIFA. EA?s product is simply too slick, too smooth and overall too well-rounded to not come out on top. It?s got by far the stronger online component, its production values and licenses make it a more ?authentic? broadcast experience and while it?s not without its problems on the pitch, it still plays a great, flowing game of football.

Good news for EA, then, but in the grand scheme of things better news for Konami and, more importantly, you, the consumer. Stronger competition between these games is exactly what the genre needs to drive innovation and keep each series on its toes, so with Pro Evo quite literally back in the game, we?ll hopefully be in for some great football titles in the nex few years.

NOTE: FIFA 13 played on PS3, Pro Evo 2013 on Xbox 360. If you?ve got any more specific questions, leave them below and I?ll do my best to answer them!

Need Advice On How To Use Marketing With Email? Try These Tips ...

A lot of people are very interested in email promoting, and how it can help their business growth. There are numerous ways you can take advantage of email marketing to grow your business and increase your interaction with customers. This article will help you design an email promoting strategy that can help you be successful with your goals.

The subject of an email must catch your readers attention and be effective. If the subject line grabs your customer?s attention, they are more likely to open the email and read it. An email with a boring or suspicious subject line will probably get deleted without ever being opened.

TIP! Holidays are an important consideration when it comes to email marketing plans. Plan out your entire year.

The information you collect from your customer upon signing up for your list should be used to give them the best shopping experience possible. When a customer clicks on a link in your email communication, their subscription information can be used to auto-fill some of the purchasing form. Such steps taken to add convenience and speed to the buying process increase the odds of a successful sale.

Your email campaign needs to garner attention. This could involve some trial and error on your part. If some aspect of your campaign isn?t working, change it as soon as possible. Once you have put together a working technique, don?t rest on your laurels. Keep researching and learning in order to improve your efforts and add to them.

Sales Pitch

TIP! Make sure you have the client permission before emailing them. People consider emails that they didn?t sign up for as spam so they generally just throw these messages away and don?t bother reading them.

It is vital that your emails contain more than only a sales pitch. Email correspondence should take the form of newsletters or other informative materials relating to your industry sector. If you only include sales pitches, your customers will be unsatisfied, which could lead to them unsubscribing from your list. In order to keep your customers interested, they may need more than a sales pitch.

Before you email a customer, get their permission. If you send out unsolicited emails to customers, you have a greater chance of receiving spam complaints, which can cause your messages to not be read. Not only that, but a lot of people will choose to opt-out, which means they will not get anymore emails from you. You also run the risk of violating your ISP policy if you are called a spammer.

Emails should be an easy and quick way to communicate with customers. When writing e-mail communications, keep them relatively short, as appropriate for your intention and industry. You want to keep your customer?s attention, and sending them an overly wordy email will cause them to lose interest quickly. You can share your website URL or phone number in your email, and ask readers to visit the website or call for more info.

Op-Ed: Email accounts to increase to nearly 4.1 billion by 2015 ...

Kevin Gao, CEO of Comm100 Network Corporation, is highly optimistic of the potential of email marketing. Quoting stats from Radicati group, he claims "email accounts is expected to increase to nearly 4.1 billion by year-end 2015".
In an exclusive interview with this reporter, Gao reveals some of the compelling reasons for popularity of email campaigns.

Why do you think email is the best marketing strategy? Or, do you think, it is? I?m not going to nominate any single marketing method as the ?best? one since there will always be a different recipe for different businesses. However, I do believe that Email Marketing is one of the most efficient ways for businesses in today?s market. For years, email has been the major as well as most essential portal for communication, both personal and business. Stats from Radicati Group show that the number of worldwide email accounts is expected to increase from an installed base of 3.1 billion in 2011 to nearly 4.1 billion by year-end 2015. This represents an average annual growth rate of 7% over the next three years. Even with the new-arisen social media networks at hands, most people still check their inboxes 5 ~ 10 times everyday. So why not email? By a gentle click on the ?send? button you are greeting hundreds to thousands of your customers. Isn?t it strange that most people think business and advertisement related emails as nuisance, yet, email marketing remains most popular? Your comments? Email marketing should be popular. In my opinion, there?re quite a few compelling reasons for that: ? First of all, email marketing is cost effective. As mentioned above, email is so widely accepted by people and more importantly, the cost of sending an email is much lower than most traditional marketing methods such as TV and PPC advertisements. That?s probably why some marketers began to abuse the power of email marketing in recent years, but this is not going to change the fact that being affordable is one of the top benefits of email marketing, especially for small-to-medium businesses. ? Secondly, email is non-intrusive. With the development of our business world, customers today are actually flooded with promotional offer under the sun. However, most people obviously don?t like those advertisements that just fall on their faces and have become quite defensive, which makes marketing a lot harder these days. Under such a circumstance, ?non-intrusive marketing? methods started to get popular, among which email marketing is a very typical one. Compared with broadcasting or SMS advertisements, email is less disturbing to people?s daily life. As long as the business has a good relationship with their recipients and gets the right content and reasonable interval between each send, their marketing emails will likely be accepted by the recipients, which makes email marketing a great tool for building brand recognition and maintaining customer relationship in the long term. ? Thirdly, email is ideal for rich content. Email marketing enjoys a combination of text and graphics to present one?s marketing message, and moreover, businesses can always design a landing page for a certain link in their email to further engage the recipients. ? Fourthly, email is a perfect platform for re-marketing. With Comm100 Email Marketing software, clients will be able to track the open-rates, click-through rates and other stats for their email campaigns. Moreover, they can easily integrate those figures with their site interaction data. This is going to provide a clear ?picture? of each customer, which will then enable them to better segment their lists and send more personalized and targeted emails to follow up. Is email campaign effective in all business communication (off line and online) or are there some businesses where email technique is less likely to be fairly successful? Any marketing campaign has its limitation on the range of audiences, email marketing as well. Generally speaking, email marketing is more suitable for long-term relationship building than real-time communication. It works with any business who would like to build up a brand in the market and maintain good relationships with their customers. We have been serving for more than 55,000 clients from multiple niches including technology, education, ecommerce, etc. Results vary from client to client, but we haven?t yet spotted any specific type of businesses that didn?t enjoy a positive result. Customers today are expecting to receive more specific emails than before. In order to help our clients to better target their customers, we released our ?behavior-based trigger email campaign? and ?automated trigger email campaign? earlier this year, which provide even more customization for different businesses. There must be many among hundreds and thousands of email recipients that are not active. How do you ensure that most of the hundreds and thousands of emails you send to the prospects are being at least seen and read? For online marketing, data tracking and collecting is an indispensable part and to some extend, the only way to evaluate how exactly a marketing task is running. There?re two important indicators in Email Marketing as ?open-rate? and ?click-through rate?, which are used by businesses to analyze how many recipients are actually opening and reading their emails. Comm100 provides reliable tracking tools and robust reports to our clients for those two indicators and many more in order to help them gain and record related data, and avoid future sends to inactive prospects. On the other hand, status of a recipient is not totally unchangeable. As long as an email lands on a solid email address, there will always be chances that the recipient finds it and opens it to read. Content is the King here. With the right content, an inactive recipient can also be converted to a loyal reader, and that?s why we set up personal coaching and support for every client. When using our service, clients will receive practical advices on how to design an email template that stands out in their recipients? inboxes. This may includes quite a few elements. For example, a good subject line could improve open rate from, say, 4% to more than 30%. What kind of guarantees, if any, do you give to your clients? We here at Comm100 are always dedicated in helping our customers to improve their business performance by offering our best service and support. For our email marketing services, we guarantee all our clients an average delivery rate of 90% or above, and an even higher one of 99.6% for VIP clients, which may bring 15% extra sales per month as reported by one of our clients GDLsystems.com. Do you have refund policy in place in case customers are not satisfied with your services? Comm100 provides a 15-day free trial for all of our products with no credit card required. Clients are welcomed to check our products and services out at any time. After the free trial period, clients still have 30 days to submit a refund request if they found our products or services not satisfying. We will then follow case by case to ensure that we stick to our original commitment to the clients. Do you help clients build the list? In what ways? Most of our clients came to us with their own lists. However, even if they don?t have anything in hands, they can still start by using our tool to add a fully-customizable ?sign-up box? or ?subscription form? to their sites, which will then help them collect email addresses from their site visitors. Besides, we also provide tools to help clients import, prune and manage their existing lists in order to keep a healthy list for the long term. Do you advise clients on improving campaign, if success doesn?t appear with their ongoing campaign? Definitely yes. We?re here to help our clients grow and develop. Personal coaching and services are available to all clients. Besides, we also provide open Email Marketing Resources, including a start-up level Email Marketing Tutorial, a more comprehensive Email Marketing White Paper and an Email Marketing eBook on our site to guide all email marketers who are striving for a successful email campaign A good email marketing campaign is never a one-time done thing, one has to keep testing and improving. We always suggest our clients to do careful list segmentation and only send relevant information to a certain group of recipients. Meanwhile, we also offer professional review of our clients? emails to help them create better campaigns. Finally, what future do you see for email marketing five or ten years down the line? Personally, I think email as a marketing tool is not going to slow down in the near future. There has been studies showing that email is still the top-popular text based communication tool for 2012 and will continue to be for several years, and that will simply keep email marketing a highly profitable activity for businesses. Though Email Marketing will surely stay with us, the platforms and devices people use to check emails have begun to change. With the break out of smart phones and tablets, mobile email marketing can be the next trend. Stats from June this year say that 36% of emails are now opened on a mobile device, with 33% for desktop and 31% for webmail, which has put a mobile-friendly email campaign on many email marketers? agenda. On the other hand, the popularity of those mobile devices is also pushing the email marketing industry forward. People are now ?carrying? their inboxes everywhere, helping businesses? marketing emails to be around all the time.

News Business Online: Tips for Finding Your Small Business Social ...

On a weekly basis we meet with dozens of small business owners; from the local deli to the automotive superstore, everyone is trying to leverage social media to boost their business. We've noticed the folks having the most success all have something in common, they have a definitive voice. Voice in social media is all about extending your brand via words, by tweet, status update or video posting, your voice is how people hear you when they consume your content. Here are 5 Tips for Finding Your Social Media Voice
Use Humor - using humor will let people know that you're approachable. By being approachable people will feel comfortable interacting with your brand and they'll ask questions when they need something. Humor also implies that you're not a selling machine and that you don't take yourself too seriously. People also want to do business with people that are fun; fun people make us feel good and feeling good can lead to a purchase decision. So be sure to work a little humor into your voice.
Self-Deprecation - this is always a sure thing because people love it when we make fun of ourselves. Think about all of the self-deprecating actors/actresses and comedians that you've been entertained by. Now think about why that was effective in terms of making you laugh. For one, you can probably relate to some of the self-deprecation. For two, it demonstrates a sense of humility. Self-deprecation also implies a level of self-awareness and that more than likely means you'll be aware of me as well, your potential customer.
Dumb Things Down - whenever possible, dumb-it-down. Your audience does not want to be bored with all of the details of your product line. They just want to know what it does and how it works. Keep it high level and save the details for a later conversation. This eliminates a perception of pretentiousness can come through when being too detailed on a given topic. Knowledge is power, but too much can lead to the lights turning-off.
Refresh & Recall - point out older blog posts or content that support your current initiative. This will demonstrate consistency of your brand vision and commitment to sustaining it. Refresh your audiences memory about what you're trying to achieve and point to anything you have available to support your effort. Recalling past client experiences or sharing testimonials can also be powerful in demonstrating not only credibility but transparency.
Call to Action - your social media voice should contain a call to action. This does not mean that it needs to be over the top and salesy. Just make sure that you're asking people to do something when you interact with them. Whether it's contacting Customer Service or sharing a story with you about their experience or even downloading a coupon; work a solid call to action note into your social media communication strategy.
These might seem like fundamental elements to follow but you'd be surprised how people forget them. Instead of developing a voice using these communication strategies a lot of small businesses will just keep pushing out the same boring message. Too many times business is lost because of underwhelming communication and boring content. Keep it fun, relevant and focused on your core capabilities and you'll find your voice in no time.??? ??? ???

10 Tips To Utilizing Payday Loans | Mdar Finance Site

With a large number of individuals and families literally living from one paycheck to the next, a great number of payday lenders are offering those who are strapped for cash with a way to borrow against the guarantee of their next paycheck. For many, life?s unexpected problems often result in a cash shortage, utilities being turned off or car payments being late. Luckily for those who are in immediate need of funds, payday loans often provide the answer to an otherwise serious problem.

Below are 10 tips to using payday loans and lenders. As is the case with any loan, carefully consider the company and its reputation before moving ahead with the loan process.

$If at all possible, repay the loan in full during your next payday. This is a better option than the refinancing of payday loans, which will result in additional fees and interest.

$Do not use payday loans for vacations or unnecessary incidentals, such as jewelry or expensive clothes. Instead, payday loans should only be used for necessities, such as doctor visits and medicine, groceries, utilities, fuel, car repairs, etc.

$Before accepting a payday loan from a lender, make sure that you have read and understand the entire contract. Always read the fine print and ask questions about anything that you do not understand before signing on the dotted line.

$When dealing with a payday loan lender, check out their reputation with the Better Business Bureau.

$If you plan to apply for payday loans, make sure to have copies of your most recent paycheck stubs and contact information for your current employer.

$Payday loans are not commonly granted to self-employed individuals because of their unpredictable income. Rather than applying for payday loans, a self-employed individual may wish to consider a secured personal loan.

$If you find that your payday loans have been refinanced multiple times and are becoming unmanageable, consider applying for a credit card that offers 0% APR for 6-12 months or one with a low introductory interest rate. Upon approval and receipt of the card, use the available credit to pay off your payday loan in order to prevent it from continuing to roll over and increase time after time.

$Even if you have poor credit, you may be able to obtain payday loans. The reason is because a credit check is rarely conducted but rather, in the case of payday loans, the more important verification comes in the form of current employment and salary.

$When you apply for payday loans, you may be required to issue a postdated check in the amount of the loan plus fees and interest, which will be cashed on the date of your next paycheck unless the loan is refinanced.

$Because payday loans focus their intended repayment on the date of your next paycheck, you must be able to provide proof of a regular payday schedule from your current employer.

Sit-coms have never exactly flourished on Canadian TV, but the success of YTV?s ?Mr. Young? may be about to change that ~~

By Emily Olesen ~~

Studio audience watches taping of Mr. YoungSitting in the Mr. Young audience is like watching a live action cartoon. Props from past episodes adorn the walls of the studio, including oversized products from ?Cyclops Wholesale Food Suppliers,? a Prius-sized beetle, and a morbid looking papier-m?ch? chicken. The atmosphere is carnival-like as warm-up guy Dave Dimpailus plays a round of ?guess what?s in my bag? with the studio audience. Then he plays ?produce a library card and win a prize.? The audience is remarkably pumped ? given that the prize is a fridge magnet.

Maybe that?s because, on this warm summer?s night in Burnaby, BC, they?re present for a nearly unheard of event in Canada ? the taping of a hit sit-com. Produced by Vancouver?s Thunderbird Films, Mr. Young is the creation of Toronto-born television writer Dan Signer, who has returned from the U.S., along with co-executive producer Howard Nemetz, to oversee an all-Canadian cast, writing-room, and crew, almost all of whom are working on a sit-com for the first time.

Mr. Young is produced for Canada?s YTV, where it?s the network?s top-rated show. It?s also broadcast on Disney XD in the States, not to mention a growing list of other countries, including Israel, Poland, and Brazil. Though aimed at ?tweens and teens, the show?s success may herald a comeback for sit-coms generally in Canada. Already Thunderbird has been given the greenlight by Citytv for a second series, Package Deal, to be shot in yet another converted Vancouver-area warehouse beginning later this year. And a third is in the works.

?We?re going for a 100% authentic Burbank classic way of doing it,? says Alexandra Raff?, Head of Production for Thunderbird, of the company?s sit-com line-up. ?The same style used in I Love Lucy.? Pioneered by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in the 1950s, the so-called ?multi-cam? comedy ? shot then with three cameras, now more often with four, and with a live studio audience providing the laughs ? has never exactly flourished in Canada (as anyone who remembers the shudder-worthy Trouble with Tracy or Mosquito Lake can attest). Instead, Canadian TV comedies are usually shot movie-style with a single camera (think Corner Gas or Little Mosque on the Prairie).

But with an eye on the American market, and particularly Disney?s string of studio-shot hits for kids, Thunderbird and YTV took a gamble on the format with Mr. Young. And the mostly teenaged audience members seated in bleachers in front of the show?s various school-themed sets, and now noshing on free pizza while they wait patiently for the next take, seem as happy about the results as Thunderbird itself.

?

Brandon MeyerThe show?s star is Edmonton actor Brendan Meyer, who landed the role after a nationwide search. ?This really is an adult job,? says the still-boyish 17-year old. ?It?s similar to what Adam Young is doing, with all the adult responsibility.?

Meyer plays a 14-year-old genius who, recently graduated from university, has turned down a job with NASA to teach high school science instead. Much of the action focuses on his efforts to recapture the normal teenage life he thinks he?s missed, including reconnecting with his dimwitted childhood friend Derby (Gig Morton) and attempting to date one of his students, Echo (Matreya Fedor), an archetypal girl-next-door and closeted science fiction fancier. Ironically, the show?s fictitious Finnegan High is the first school of any kind that Meyer has set foot in. ?I was homeschooled my whole life,? he laughs.

He also brings an impressive theatre background to the show, having performed for three seasons with Edmonton?s Freewill Shakespeare Festival. (On his website, he identifies himself as a ?self-professed Shakespeare nerd.?) The two experiences ? sit-coms and Shakespeare ? aren?t as different as you might think, he says. ?It?s a lot like doing theatre,? he notes of Mr. Young?s rambunctious Friday night shoots. ?You get that live laughter and that automatic response. But the nice thing is that you also get the multiple takes.?

Jennica Harper, a writer and supervising producer for the show (and self-professed ?TV junkie?), says she?s ?fallen in love? with the multi-camera format. ?It?s incredible to see how the atmosphere in the studio changes the minute there?s a live audience. The actors thrive when they have instant feedback, and can hear people laughing.? (Small microphones hang over the bleachers to capture the crowd?s reactions ? although, as with most sit-coms, a laugh-track is also added later.)

?It?s also really energizing for the writers,? says Harper of the live reaction ? especially when a gag doesn?t work. ?I?m not sure there?s a bigger adrenaline rush than when we need to rewrite a joke in two minutes in between takes during the live show.? She attributes much Exterior of Finnegan High, on the set of Mr. Youngof the show?s success to its unique, anything-goes comic style. ?YTV gives us great freedom, which means we can really push the realism envelope. Adam Young has wrestled an alligator, turned into a moth, and accidentally launched himself and his friends into space.?

One reason sit-coms haven?t taken hold in Canada may be the pricetag; shooting in a multi-camera format can add as much as $400,000 to the cost of a season. ?They?re super-expensive for the Canadian market,? Raff? notes. For Package Deal, Thunderbird is once again hedging its bets by bringing home an experienced ex-pat Canadian, creator Andrew Orenstein (Malcolm in the Middle, Third Rock from the Sun). With an initial order from Citytv for 13 episodes, the series, about an up-and-coming lawyer (Randal Edwards) trying to make his way in the dating scene despite two co-dependent older brothers (Harland Williams and Jay Malone), will air sometime next year.

As for the future of sit-coms generally in Canada, Raff? isn?t about to make any grand predictions. ?So much of this business is cycles of fashion,? she says. ?Everything that was once in fashion will come back. And at the moment it?s multi-cams.?

This much we know: Lucy would love it.

Looking for more Canadian sitcoms? These retro comedies represent the best and absolute worst in true north TV history:

King of Kensington (1975 ? 80)

This highly influential ?70s CBC sit-com followed corner store operator Larry King as he helped out his neighbours in Toronto?s crowded, multi-cultural Kensington Market area. The show?s progressiveness and topicality drew comparisons to Norman Lear?s sit-coms of the same period, All in the Family and Maude. It also gave a 12-year old Mike Myers his first on-screen role. Myers later named the character Vanessa Kensington in his Austin Powers movies after the show. At its peak, it drew 1.5-1.8 million viewers per week.

Maniac Mansion (1990 ? 93)

Eugene Levy created this absurd sit-com loosely based on a LucasArts computer game. The game focused on a group of pixilated teenagers trying to rescue their friend from an evil scientist and his frightening family. The TV incarnation centered on the kooky Edison clan, consisting of Fred, an eccentric but loveable scientist played by Levy?s fellow SCTV alumnus Joe Flaherty, his wife Casey, and their three children, including Turner, a four-year-old trapped inside a grown man?s body. Then there?s Casey?s brother, Harry Orca, who has been transformed into a fly. Time Magazine named Maniac Mansion one of the 10 best TV shows of 1990.

The Trouble with Tracy (1970 ? 71)

Certainly one of the worst sit-coms of all time, anywhere, The Trouble with Tracy was created mostly to appease then-new Canadian content regulations. The scripts were adapted from a World War Two era radio series with little attempt at modernization. Set in New York City (so much for Canadian content), the show followed the hijinx of newlywed Tracy (sporting miniskirts to rival Marcia Brady?s paisleys) and hubby Doug, an advertising executive. Occasionally Tracy?s nagging mother or Doug?s flower child brother-in-law would make an appearance. The show aired daily and 130 episodes were shot in its single season of existence, some of them going to air bloopers and all.

Ways to Place Your New Product on the Market

Few things are as exciting in an online business than the day you launch a new product. This day has the ability to satisfy you, disappoint you or leave you wondering what went wrong. Yes, the online marketplace can be cruel and seemingly heartless. It?s best to forget about the past (except when everything goes right of course) and focus on what you can do better with future launches. If you want to get better results with your product launches, you should take advantage of the many resources that can make you more knowledgeable on the subject. Much of that information is about solid marketing principles. You also have to make sure you?re well prepared for things like traffic generation and public relations. Making plans for both the business and marketing are worth doing, as well.

By the time you actually launch your product, you should already have your basic promotional strategy in place. You shouldn?t make it up as you go along, but have a system in place that you can follow step by step. Don?t rely solely on one type of advertising or promoting. You should have as many as possible because that will give you the greatest exposure and success. Don?t limit yourself to the internet -consider radio, newspapers and even TV ads. Target websites where your prospects go and inquire about advertising there. In the end, you want a coordinated advertising campaign that gives you massive promotions.

Never forget that all products have a shelf life or a life cycle. There are many reasons for this and that is not what this is about. Products differ in this regard, and you don?t have to know how long yours will last on the marketplace. Where you can really benefit from this knowledge is in doing a new launch for an old product. This is how you can reinvigorate an older product, perhaps by adding some new features. It?s a good idea to send out a survey to your customers and ask for suggestions about releasing the product again. You can use this information when you relaunch, so you can emphasize the product?s best features.

If you have been in IM, then you have heard about beta testing. You can do this before you launch your campaign and save yourself a lot of money. If you are doing everything online, then one approach is to segment your email list if you have one. You be able to form a joint venture with online businesses that will forward your products to their email lists. Establish your time period for beta testing. It is common for these to last for months but it?s really up to you and how patient you are with things.

You can study product launches by well-known online marketers, or larger businesses, but they may not be the best for you. You may be lacking their budget, contacts and huge email list. Remember that many successful marketers started out just where you are right now. Keep learning all you can and then proceed with confidence for your next launch.

If you are new to IM, then approach Spillover Commissions review along with its many components carefully so you will be able to realize maximum leveraging opportunities.
