Census shows whites are a minority in London

More than 600,000 white British Londoners have left the capital in the last ten years, according to new census data available in the United Kingdom. The numbers show that between 2001 and 2011 the number of whites departing from London reached 620,000. This number is equal to the population of the city of Glasgow, Scotland, where the ethnic makeup is almost entirely white. This white flight from London has now made whites a minority in the British capital. The census also shows some rural areas have seen an uptick in the proportion of people who describe their ethnicity as ?white British?. Some 3.7million Londoners classified themselves as white British in 2011, despite the city?s population increasing by nearly one million over the decade to 8.2million. In 2001, the number of white Britons living in London was 4.3 million.

?

White Britons now make up 45 per cent of the population, compared with 58 per cent in 2001. Immigrants have boosted the population of London over the last ten years with three million foreign-born people now living there. Five London boroughs saw the proportion of white Britons fall by more than 25 percent. The largest decline was in Newham, East London, where the decrease was 37.5 per cent. In Barking and Dagenham, on the East London/Essex border, 80 per cent of residents were white British in 2001 but by 2011 the proportion was 49 per cent.

?

Comments came from both politicians and those who watch population trends closely. A town councillor of Barking and Dagenham said that Britons have left London for a variety of reasons, including retirement. Councillor?Ralph Baldwin said the former residents of London thought "'We don?t know where we are living any more?.

?One day they are in a place that they think is Essex and then they are living in another place...It has never been an issue of race. It?s about the inability of people to affect change. The world was changing around them and they couldn?t do anything about it."

?

The largest ethnic group now living in London consists of Asians, many of whom are of Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi parentage who come from overseas and born in the UK. They make up 18 per cent of the population. Black Londoners from Africa, the Caribbean and native-born, now make up 13 per cent.

?

Elsewhere in England and Wales, the census showed the proportion of white Britons in South Derbyshire went up by 13.7 per cent over the decade.

?

North Kesteven and West Lindsey in Lincolnshire, Uttlesford in Essex, East Northamptonshire, East Cambridgeshire, Mid Suffolk, South Norfolk, Mid Devon and Forest Heath in Suffolk also showed increases.

?

The census recorded that the population of England and Wales grew with an influx of four million immigrants during ten years of great social change. The census noted that in 2011 there were 7.5 million people born abroad living in England and Wales, while more than half had arrived since 2001.

These Tiny Telescopes Could Save the Earth from a Deep Impact

A 50-foot wide, 10,000-ton meteor that packs triple the force of the nuke dropped on Hiroshima is nothing to scoff at. But in the grand scheme of things, the meteor that hit Chelyabinsk, Russia, last week is a cosmological runt. Space rocks as much as 100 feet across are estimated to strike every hundred years or so and those like the 160-foot diameter Tunguska meteor of 1908 hit maybe once a century. More »

Younger Americans: No house, no car, less debt

The bust that followed the epic borrowing binge of the late-2000s has apparently had a sobering effect on younger borrowers.

Americans under 35 are carrying substantially less debt than they were before the 2008 meltdown, according to an analysis released Thursday by the Pew Research Center. But they?ve also put off the big ticket purchases like cars and houses that are typically the main reasons for taking on debt.

There are several reasons younger households are carrying less debt than the generations that preceded them, said Richard Fry, a Pew senior economist.

?We know they?re going to school more, so that puts them into the job market later, and they?re postponing marriage and having kids later,? he said. ?So if you marrying and having kids later, the urgency to buy a home and get a mortgage is also delayed as well.?

When they decide to begin their borrowing life in earnest, younger households are also having a harder time getting bankers to go along with their plans. Gone are the days when lenders carpet-bombed mailboxes with credit card offers or set up tables on college campuses to hand out cards with generous limits to freshmen with no steady income to pay them off.

While lending has loosened up a bit since the 2008 credit crash, bankers are saying yes only to the most creditworthy applicants. Younger borrowers -- who typically have a much shorter financial track record than older borrowers -- are having a tougher time getting approved.

?There?s some easing of credit, but we?re not talking a fire hydrant being turned wide open,? said Keith Leggett, a senior economist at the American Bankers Association. ?Mortgage lending, for example, is still tight and will probably remain that way with the rules that are coming out of Washington.?

The devastating impact of the credit bust and the resulting surge in home foreclosures also left many younger borrowers more than a little gun-shy.

Until 2006, generations of young adult Americans had no reason to doubt the conventional wisdom that buying a house was a sure-fire investment. But the allure of homeownership was badly tarnished by the housing collapse. Since the bust, homeownership has become a financial albatross for millions of Americans who now owe their lender more than their house is worth. That collective ?negative equity? now stands at about $1 trillion, according to figures released Thursday by Zillow.

The housing bust also knocked many younger households, who bought their first homes shortly before prices peaked in 2006, back into the rental market at greater rates than in the past, said Fry.

Younger Americans are also putting off borrowing to make other big-ticket purchases, including cars. In 2007, when credit was easy to get, nearly three out of four under-25 households had a car, the Pew researchers reported. By 2011, that number had dropped to two-thirds. Despite a recent surge in car buying, and a pickup in auto lending to subprime borrowers, both the number of younger households and their average loan balances have fallen since 2007.

The one exception to younger Americans' aversion to borrowing is student debt, which now stands at roughly $1 trillion outstanding. While more younger Americans are going to college and graduate school, financial aid has not kept up with rapidly rising tuitions. As a result, some 40 percent of younger households were carrying student debt in 2010, up from 34 percent in 2007.

Older households have also lightened their debt burden since the 2008 credit crunch. From a peak of $12.7 trillion in the third quarter of 2008, total household debt has fallen by about 11 percent, according to the New York Federal Reserve. The bulk of that decline has come from a 14 percent drop in mortgage debt outstanding, much of which was wiped out in foreclosure.

The exception has been among the oldest Americans, who have seen their debt burden increase sharply since the 2007 recession began, according to an analysis from the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

For households aged 75 or older, the average debt burden essentially doubled to more than $27,000 in 2010. Debt payments, most of which went to paying off a mortgage, consumed 7.1 percent of income in 2010 ? up from just 4.5 percent in 2007.

Homeowners of all ages are getting some help from record low interest rates, which have allowed many to lighten their monthly payments. On Thursday, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported that the percent of borrowers who have missed at least one payment has fallen to the lowest level since the credit crunch high in the fourth quarter of 2008.

But the overall financial health of younger households -- most of whose wealth is tied up in their homes -- has not recovered as well as older households, which tend to have more wealth in financial assets, according to Fry. While the stock market has recently rebounded to pre-crash levels, housing prices, which fell by roughly one third from peak prices, have retraced only a fraction of those losses.

The economic impact of the lower debt burdens carried by younger households will likely have a mixed impact on the economy. The smaller pool of first-time buyers is likely one of the main reasons the housing market?s post-recession recovery has been weaker than most in the past half century.

On the other hand, households with lower debt payments typically have more cash to devote to consumers spending, which makes up 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Either way, if the credit collapse of 2008 left younger borrowers with a lasting aversion to debt, that?s not good news for lenders, who have traditionally sought to build relationships with customers early in their adult life.

?That the big question that bankers are wrestling with: where are these new loans going to come from?? said Leggett. ?That is the question I get from bankers all the time.?

Canadian Cancer Society reacts to Throne Speech

TORONTO, Feb. 19, 2013 /CNW/ - The Canadian Cancer Society is pleased to hear reference to important cancer-related issues in today's Throne Speech at the Ontario Legislature.

"We know that about half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect people's health," says Joanne Di Nardo, Senior Manager of Public Issues for the Canadian Cancer Society in Ontario. "We were reassured to hear that the government remains committed to health promotion, reducing smoking rates and supporting evidence-based health policy."

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national leader in providing evidence-based information on more than 200 different types of cancer. To evaluate the evidence, the Society looks at the big picture. Information and policy recommendations are based on many scientific studies.

In 2012, an estimated 72,300 Ontarians were diagnosed with cancer and 27,900 were expected to die from the disease. According to a 2008 Ontario Health Quality Council report, 1 in 3 Ontarians will be affected by chronic disease such as cancer. Increased investments in health promotion and disease prevention are vital to the long-term sustainability of the province's healthcare system.

While the Canadian Cancer Society through the support of volunteers and donors has seen important public policy gains to prevent cancer, save lives and help people living with the disease, the Society would like to see immediate action on the following public policy recommendations:

Indoor tanning
Indoor tanning bed use before the age of 35 significantly increases the risk of melanoma. Melanoma skin cancer is one of the most common forms of skin cancer in young Ontarians aged 15 to 29, and is one of the most preventable. The Society would like to see all youth under 18 years of age restricted from indoor tanning salons because parental consent and voluntary guidelines do not work. This proposed legislation has strong support from all political parties and Ontarians.

Tobacco control
Tobacco use continues to be the leading preventable cause of death and disease in Ontario. Significant progress has been made in tobacco control through the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, however smoking rates have failed to sustain a drop below 20 per cent. The Canadian Cancer Society fully supports recommendations made by the Tobacco Strategy Advisory Group and other measures stated in the 2012 Ontario budget, some of which include:

  • Implementing a contraband tobacco control strategy that includes educating the public about health and social problems associated with tobacco and undertaking research to help measure the impact of tobacco strategies on smoking levels in the province
  • Gradually increasing tobacco taxes by $13 per carton to meet the national average
  • Banning all flavoured tobacco products

The Society is convinced that the above policies will help reduce the number of lives adversely affected by cancer.

HTC One vs Samsung Galaxy S3: The difference a year makes

Galaxy S3 vs HTC One - the phone

The first question asked when a new phone is released usually has something to do with how it stacks up against the competition. The HTC One announcement managed to walk an entire crowd of people through an smartphone unveiling without once mentioning details about the components, numerical specifications, or even what version of the Android operating system the phone runs.

We?ve since uncovered that information and poised a simple question: When it?s the HTC One vs. the Samsung Galaxy S3, which phone is better?

Galaxy S3 vs HTC One - the homescreen

Software

Samsung?s approach to the Galaxy S3 user interface, the TouchWiz overlay, focuses on organic elements. Their whole ?inspired by nature? theme is represented in water droplet notification tones, the use of bright natural colors, and a soft, flowing approach to animations. TouchWiz is also packed with features that are dormant the first time you turn the phone on, but allow the user to create a compelling and unique experience. You can move apps across desktops be moving your phone through the air, or allow the camera to keep the screen on as long as it can detect your eyes.

The TouchWiz Nature UX has grown since its launch to allow for multitasking and an enhanced sharing tool through Multi-Window support and Smart Share Direct with NFC control. The longer you use the phone, the more it becomes your own personalized experience.

Galaxy S3 vs HTC One - the homescreen 002

The new HTC Sense user interface, one of the key points to the release of the HTC One, focuses heavily on delivering an experience to the users. The ?BlinkFeed? ? basically a full-page content feed filled with social media, images, and blog posts ? grabs content and organizes it in a way that HTC has determined through intense research into what users will want. This feed consumes one whole page of the desktop, and HTC expects that most users will treat this as their home page.

The One?s new camera features HTC Zoe, a software tool designed to grab a handful of frames around a photo you want to take and use it to create a short video clip. HTC is the editor and producer in Zoe, with the user as the cameraman and the customer at the same time.

If you?re looking to personalize your HTC One, Sense offers a handful of helpful themes for both the homescreen and lockscreen that will allow you to completely re-skin the UI to fit your needs. The whole experience is very pleasing to the eye, and allows users of any skill level to appreciate the phone.

GS3 vs HTC One - snapdragon pro

Hardware

If you were to compare the specs of these two phones on paper, the Galaxy S3 would lose hands down. This isn?t surprising because the Galaxy S3 was released right around a year ago. The One?s Snapdragon 600 offers a 40% bump in performance over the S4 Pro, which is one full generation ahead of the Snapdragon S4 in the Galaxy S3. In other words, the HTC One is faster and is able to do more with less battery drain. The 2300mAh battery in the HTC One is likely to last longer than the 3300mAh expansion battery that is available for the Galaxy S3.

If you?re not all that concerned by what?s under the hood, the design decisions between Samsung and HTC offer a considerable choice. Samsung?s design is one of flexible, removable plastics. The battery and microSD card slot on the Galaxy S3 serve as a constant reminder that you can expand this phone at will. If a users wants to add wireless charging to their Galaxy S3, they can simply replace the battery plate with one that supports the technology. It?s a flexible design that many users appreciate knowing exists even if they never use it.

Galaxy S3 vs HTC One - overlay

The HTC One continues the line of completely sealed phones with its aluminum unibody design. This has two major implications ? no expandable storage and no replaceable battery. There are only two storage options and no microSD, but in return you get a phone that feels remarkably solid and absolutely smooth from edge to edge. The The 1080p screen on the HTC One feels like it could outshine the sun, while the Super Amoled display on the Galaxy S3 shows incredibly color richness with very deep blacks.

The two phones offer very different hardware choices, but neither one is necessarily better than the other.

It all comes down to you

Samsung and HTC have very different approached to the smartphone right now, in both hardware and software. Samsung is looking for the the best way to grab as many users as possible and let them figure things out for themselves. HTC has made a very targeted approach for users who are interested in consuming and creating media for themselves.

If your smartphone is a constant source of entertainment, whether its music, movies, or games, the HTC One is your phone. If you?re not really sure what you want from your phone, but you?re really interested in everything, the Galaxy S3 will keep you busy for a long time, even if you decide you?d like to root the phone and explore the ROM community.

There?s also price to consider. The One is going to be available for $199 on a new contract, while the now year old Galaxy S3 is headed out the door as soon as its successor ? like the Galaxy S4 ? arrives some time this spring. The Galaxy S3 will be available on deals and specials that the HTC One won?t be on for a long time.

Reports of toxic milk trigger scare in Balkans

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Reports that milk in the Balkans has been contaminated by a cancer-causing toxin have triggered a major health scare throughout the region, with authorities appealing for calm before official tests are conclusive.

Senior agriculture official Goran Jesic claims on his website that out of 35 tested milk samples in Serbia, 29 had higher levels of aflatoxin than allowed. A low dose of the toxin, linked to mildewed cattle feed, is not considered harmful, but high doses are linked to cancer, especially of the liver.

Bosnian veterinary officials said Tuesday that concentrations of aflatoxin above the limit had been found in imported milk from Hungary, Slovenia and Germany and that a shipment from Serbia is also suspected. Recently, Bosnia's border controls have found the toxin in milk imported from Croatia.

5 tips to help you win Oscar pool

By Cody Delistraty, NBC News contributor

This year is special. It?s the one in which that you?re finally going to win your Oscar pool. You may not go 24 for 24, but you?ll have history on your side to get you close to that magic number.

?This year, with ?Argo? making a late-surge for best picture, a Pixar film ("Brave") that isn?t a shoo-in for best animated film and, as always, a host of difficult categories, the field is open for you to beat that film geek three cubicles over.

Here are five historically tried-and-true steps to help you through your pool:

1.?Lean towards dramas and period pieces
The Academy tends to go for more serious pieces in the big four categories (film, director, actor, actress). The last time a musical or comedy took home the best picture Oscar was ?Chicago? in 2002 and before that it was Woody Allen?s ?Annie Hall? in 1977. However, for supporting actors and actresses, the Academy likes to have a bit more fun. Remember Penelope Cruz?s supporting role as an off-the-wall ex-wife in 2008?s ?Vicky Cristina Barcelona?? We sure do. The Academy loved it too.

2. Sound is for blockbusters, costumes are for historical dramas
Figure these out and you can rack up points on the categories where your competitors are just throwing darts and guessing. For sound, think big and popular ?In most years, this is where action films shine. On the other side of the coin, best costume is almost invariably given to anything set before 1900.??Marie Antoinette?, ?Elizabeth: The Golden Age,? ?The Duchess,? ?The Young Victoria." have all done well. And that?s just in the last six years. This year, you can bet on ?Anna Karenina.?

3. Pay attention to other races, like the Golden Globes
These aren?t always direct indicators, but the Globes, Screen Actors Guild awards and others are some of the best Oscar predictors out there. It?s thanks to these races that ?Argo? is making an Oscars surge late in the game. Check out this graph that shows how recent awards have put ?Argo? in the driver?s seat.

4. Sympathy is key
At the 2012 Oscars, two-time winner Meryl Streep had been nominated 12 times without taking home another trophy. So was a nomination for ?The Iron Lady? even worth showing up for? Turns out the thirteenth?time proved to be the charm, and she took home the statue for the first time since ?Sophie?s Choice.? The Academy likes to spread the love ?- so it can be advantageous to have not won before or at least in a very long time, especially if you?re in a category with recent winners. Look to apply this knowledge to the actress category again and pick Jennifer Lawrence of ?Silver Linings Playbook." Her mature, controlled performance in ?Winter?s Bone? was overlooked in 2011 in favor of the flashier Natalie Portman in ?Black Swan.? Lawrence is also a full-on star now thanks to her lead role in ?The Hunger Games.? The Academy will honor the leaps and bounds she?s made in her career.

?5. Best picture and director are a match made in heaven -- except maybe this year
In the last 10 years, only two movies have upset this match-up: ?The Pianist? in 2002 and ?Brokeback Mountain? in 2005. This year, though, is particularly tricky. Ben Affleck didn?t even get a nomination for best director and yet his film, ?Argo,? is heating up on the awards circuits. Steven Spielberg's favored to win the director award, which would normally mean "Lincoln" as best picture. But all that "Argo" heat is hard to ignore. Split the vote this year.

Be sure to check out the predictions from some of the best on the web, including Gold Derby, The Chicago Tribune, IndieWire, and even the votes of three anonymous Academy members over at The LA Times. You can check out my predictions here too.

Mom grieves after daughter found dead on NY beach

By Lori Bordonaro, NBCNewYork.com

The grief-stricken mother of a 24-year-old missing woman whose body was found washed up on a New York City beach is looking for answers in the death of her daughter.

The body of Marisha Cheong was found Saturday morning along Jamaica Bay at 149 Bayside Avenue in Roxbury, Queens, police said. She had been missing since December.

"She didn't deserve this," said Cheong's mother, Bibi Ali, as she cried Monday. "They threw her away like trash."

Cheong's hands were tied up, sources said.?

Cheong was living with her boyfriend Latchman Balkaran in Jamaica, Queens, when she went missing Dec. 19. Balkaran told NBC 4 New York the two had been looking forward to the holidays and that she had left their home to go shopping when she disappeared.

"It's just very hard to imagine what could have happened to her," he said. "I just don't know what person or human being would do that to someone."

"She was everything to me," said Balkaran. "My family loved her like a daughter. My sister loved her like a sister."

Read more from NBCNewYork.com

Balkaran said after five years of dating, he was about to propose to Cheong. But her mother painted a different picture of her daughter's longtime boyfriend, saying they had financial problems and that she was suspicious of him.

"He has to know what he did with her," she said. "Only he can tell me what he did with my daughter."

Balkaran responded, "I didn't have anything to do with her death. I am as lost as much as they are. They know how much I loved her."

Ali said police are looking into some text messages, including one she received from her daughter the day before she disappeared.

"I knew in my heart it wasn't her," said Ali. "She doesn't say 'Mom.' She usually says 'Mommy.'"

The medical examiner is still working to determine the cause of death. Police said they have questioned Cheong's boyfriend and her family, and the investigation is ongoing.

Poor stress responses may lead to obesity in children

Feb. 14, 2013 ? Children who overreact to stressors may be at risk of becoming overweight or obese, according to researchers at Penn State and Johns Hopkins University.

"Our results suggest that some children who are at risk of becoming obese can be identified by their biological response to a stressor," said Lori Francis, associate professor of biobehavioral health. "Ultimately, the goal is to help children manage stress in ways that promote health and reduce the risks associated with an over- or under-reactive stress response."

Francis and her colleagues -- Douglas Granger, director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Salivary Bioscience Research at Johns Hopkins University, and Elizabeth Susman, Jean Phillips Shibley Professor of Biobehavioral Health at Penn State -- recruited 43 children ages 5- to 9-years-old and their parents to participate in the study.

To examine the children's reactions to a stressor, the team used the Trier Social Stress Test for Children, which consists of a five-minute anticipation period followed by a 10-minute stress period. During the stress period, the children were asked to deliver a speech and perform a mathematics task. The team measured the children's responses to these stressors by comparing the cortisol content of their saliva before and after the procedure.

The researchers also measured the extent to which the children ate after saying they were not hungry using a protocol known as the Free Access Procedure. The team provided the children with lunch, asked them to indicate their hunger level and then gave them free access to generous portions of 10 snack foods, along with a variety of toys and activities. The children were told they could play or eat while the researchers were out of the room.

The results appeared online in the December 2012 issue of the journal Appetite.

The team found that, on average, the children consumed 250 kilocalories of the snack foods during the Free Access Procedure, with some consuming small amounts (20 kilocalories) and others consuming large amounts (700 kilocalories).

"We found that older kids, ages 8 to 11, who exhibited greater cortisol release over the course of the procedure had significantly higher body-mass indices [BMI] and consumed significantly more calories in the absence of hunger than kids whose cortisol levels rose only slightly in response to the stressor," Francis said. "We also found that kids whose cortisol levels stayed high -- in other words, they had low recovery -- had the highest BMIs and consumed the greatest number of calories in the absence of hunger."

According to Francis, the study suggests that children who have poor responses to stressors already are or are at risk of becoming overweight or obese. In her future work, she plans to examine whether children who live in chronically stressful environments are more susceptible to eating in the absence of hunger and, thus, becoming overweight or obese.

"It is possible that such factors as living in poverty, in violent environments, or in homes where food is not always available may increase eating in the absence of hunger and, therefore, increase children's risk of becoming obese," she said.
